Tips for Preparing Your Motorhome for a Road Trip

Mainline Truck Team • December 6, 2024

Going on a road trip in your motorhome is exciting, but the right preparation is key to ensuring a smooth and enjoyable journey. Your motorhome requires careful attention before hitting the open road.

Here, our team at
Mainline RV & Truck Service, a motorhome repair shop, explores essential tips to get your motorhome ready for your road trip.

Deep Clean Your Motorhome

A thorough cleaning is the foundation of motorhome preparation. Not only does it make your journey more pleasant, but it can also help you point out potential issues.

To clean the inside of your motorhome, start by emptying and cleaning all cabinets and storage areas. Then, vacuum and mop the floors, wipe down the walls and ceilings, and clean appliances, including the refrigerator and oven. Don’t forget to sanitize the bathroom. Use this opportunity to declutter and remove items you no longer need.

Clean the outside of your motorhome by beginning with the roof and making sure to use a gentle detergent.
Clean the sidewalls from top to bottom and pay special attention to windows and bug screens. Apply a protective wax coating to shield against road grime and insects.

Lubricate Moving Parts

Consult your owner's manual for the appropriate lubricants for each part. Key areas to lubricate include door hinges and catches, slide-out rails and rams, awning mechanisms, landing legs and stabilizers, and entrance steps. Don't forget to clean these parts before applying lubricant, especially if they're grimy from previous trips.

Inspect and Maintain Exterior Features

Take time to examine and maintain the external components of your
motorhome. Follow the steps below:

  1. Check the awning for damage and treat it with a UV-resistant spray.
  2. Inspect the TV antenna and ensure that it’s functioning correctly.
  3. Examine waste valve rods for smooth operation.
  4. Look over the hitch and pin box and make sure they're properly lubricated.

Perform Tire Maintenance

Your motorhome's tires are its foundation on the road. Give them the attention they deserve by checking the tire pressure and inflating it to the recommended levels. Inspect tread depth to ensure that it’s adequate for your journey and look for any other signs of wear or damage. Be sure to clean the wheels thoroughly and remove accumulated brake dust.

Review Safety Equipment

Safety should always be a top priority. Verify that all safety equipment, including the fire extinguisher, smoke and carbon monoxide detector, first aid kit, and emergency road kit, is present and in good working order.
