The Most Important Considerations When Choosing Truck Tires

Mainline Truck Team • June 7, 2022

Every component on your truck is important, but your tires are among the most important. You need a good set of tires, suited for your truck, to be able to maintain control of your load - especially during rough weather. A great set of tires can also help reduce fuel waste, which is important when gasoline prices are as high as they currently are.

At Mainline RV & Truck Service, we have the expertise to help you find the perfect tires for your truck.  These are some of the most important factors you should consider when choosing.

Three Critical Factors When Choosing Tires for Your Truck

1 - Size

Your tires need to be the right size to match your truck's own size and load. Fortunately, this is usually easy to determine, since your truck's owner’s manual will specify the right size and type for it.

However, as a general rule, P-Metric (Passenger Metric) tires are best for light-duty machines and can also be found on larger civilian vehicles like minivans.  They are rarely rated for heavy loads. LT-Metric (Light Truck Metric) are for larger professional vehicles, up to Class 1-3, with higher inflation pressures and deeper tread than P-Metric tires. Your RV needs to be fully loaded and put on scales to see how much load you are carrying to determine the proper air pressure for your tires

2 - Load ratings

A tire's load rating is a representation of how much weight it can safely carry when inflated to proper specifications. These are easy to understand because they're based on letters and go upwards based on the load rating.  So, classes B, C, D, E, and F are typically found on light-duty trucks, while heavier trucks use classes F through L.

In all cases, the higher the letter, the higher the tire inflation pressure will be as well. If you ever change tire classes when buying a new set, be sure to remember the new pressure guideline.
