Improved Sway Bars Are One of the Best RV Suspension Upgrades

There's a dirty little secret about most RVs being sold on the market - their suspension just isn't very good and is often inadequate for the vehicle you're driving.

It's sadly common for people to buy a new RV and drive it off the lot, only to be shocked the first time a strong crosswind hits them, and their RV feels like it's about to tip over. This could also happen when a large semi-truck rushes by, or even when taking a curve just a bit too hard.

Some RV owners even think this is what's supposed to happen - but it's not. The problem is the suspension system, which is why one of the best RV suspension upgrades you could purchase is new sway bars.

The Problem With Stock RV Sway Bars

Why are RV suspension systems so often bad? Because most of the Class-C and Class-A RVs sold in America are built on top of completely stock Ford or Chevy truck chassis. A chassis intended to support a pickup truck is simply not ready to haul around a motorhome that's 2-3 times the size and weight of a pickup.

The chassis is just good enough to pass various inspections and quality regulations, but it results in a vehicle that is extremely prone to sway back and forth - or tip over with relatively little warning.

Either way, one of the best things you can do is invest in improved roll bars.

Why Your RV Needs Better Roll Bars

Roll bars, also called anti-sway bars or stabilizers, are a part of the suspension system in larger vehicles. They're made from a long solid metal pipe that stretches across your vehicle, wheel-to-wheel along with the axle. This pipe acts as a torsion spring, which reacts to twisting movements.

In other words, if your RV tries to sway to one side, the roll bar actively fights against the sway with a mechanical force that pushes your RV upright again.

This prevents your RV from swaying wildly in the wind, and it will also help prevent the RV from losing balance when taking hard turns. Granted, you should always be gentle when turning an RV, since it's going to be a bit top-heavy and prone to rollover. However, an improved roll bar will go a long way towards preventing that!
